Lois (Parker) Barber Obituary

Lois R. Barber (née Parker) passed away peacefully at home on April 27, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Born July 18, 1929, she was the daughter of Vernon and Charlotte "Lottie" (Shepherd) Parker and younger sister to Paul C. Parker. She resided in Millville her entire life, graduating from Millville High School in 1946.

Lois married her high school sweetheart Louis R. Barber Jr. in 1949 after his return from service in WWII, and they continued to live in Millville. Together, they raised three children and built their homestead which would come to serve their family through decades of holidays, birthdays, celebrations, and times of grief. They enjoyed several deep and life-long friendships and were known as fun-loving hosts and the couple to watch on the dance floor.

Lois worked at the Cassell Insurance Agency and later operated the popular Milady Shop on High Street in Millville along with her mother-in-law, Evelyn Barber. She capped off her working years as the attendance secretary of Millville Senior High School, where her skills as a mother of three served her well in dealing with the youth of Millville and their ever-creative shenanigans. While engaged in these career endeavors and well into her retirement years, Lois spent much of her life dedicated to service for others. She received an award in 2024 for 70 years of continuous service as a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Lois also served over the decades in various roles, including leader of the children’s choir and Clerk of the Vestry (providing many years of meeting minutes in her lovely handwriting) at Christ Episcopal Church in Millville. On the home front, Lois provided loving care for her mother and many aunts and uncles throughout their senior years. To keep fit for all the duties she lovingly fulfilled, Lois took up the game of golf with great enthusiasm and developed both skill and luck in abundance. Known among her many golf pals and co-competitors as a “pita” due to her knack for sinking tricky putts and getting out of trouble on the fairways, Lois treasured her golfing friends and their many memorable outings and moments, including a satisfying hole-in-one on her home course of Centerton.

Lois is survived by her son, Louis R. Barber III (Bertha Elaine) and daughter Catherine M. Barber (Susan Caldwell); her grandchildren and their spouses, Louis R. Barber IV (Stella), Claire Simmerman (Steven), Douglas Beck (Beth Maher) and Theresa Jones (Brandon), great-grandchildren Alison Barber (Jake Boggs), Theodore and Louis E. Jones, and Charlotte "Lottie" Beck; sisters-in-law Lucille Barber and Carole Barber, many dear nieces and nephews, and her devoted dog Annie. She was preceded in death by her beloved daughter Pamela R. Beck (2024), her parents, husband Louis (2004), her brother Paul C. Parker (2002), sister-in-law Shirley "Sherry" Parker (2018), brothers-in-law Edward Barber (2013) and Philip Barber (2024), and lifelong friend Mary Nixon (2011), along with several cherished family pets.

Funeral services honoring Lois will be held on Thursday, May 1, 2025 at Christ Episocopal Church, 225 Sassafras St. in Millville, with a viewing for family and friends beginning at 10:00 am followed by the funeral service beginning at 11:00 am. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations honoring Lois would be gratefully received by the South Jersey Regional Animal Shelter (https://sjras.org/donate/).
