Judith Benfer (nee Harris) passed away suddenly on August 9th, 2024 from complications due to Alzheimer’s. Judy was born October 24, 1943 at Millville Hospital to Arthur and Frances Harris. She was a Millville High School graduate, class of 1962. She was married to the love of her life Michael Walter Benfer for 58 years.
Judy first worked at Woolworth’s Department Store. She was employed for many years with the Millville Tax Office. As a second job, she sold Avon products. She found a career as the Principal’s secretary at both the Junior and Senior High Schools.
She was very active in the community. Judy served on the Junior Women’s Club, and in 1976, was elected President. She was a union representative for many years and was instrumental in combining support staff and Millville Teacher’s Education Association. As a union representative, she served as a delegate to conventions, and traveled to New Orleans, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Orlando. She was also appointed to, and loved serving on, the City of Millville Zoning Board.
Judy loved to cook for her family, especially holiday pies and cookies. She enjoyed going to Atlantic City Racecourse to admire the horses. She loved crossword puzzles and playing cards with friends and family. Judy had a passion for 1950’s ballads and would sing along to them without reservation. She had a beautiful singing voice. She enjoyed traveling immensely to Niagara Falls and Newport, Rhode Island and cruises to Bermuda and the Hawaiian Islands.
Judy was predeceased by her brothers Jack Harris, Robert Harris, and sister Virginia Latanzi (nee Harris). She cherished her children Darren Benfer, Dawn Francesconi (nee Benfer) and William Benfer; and grandchildren Robert Francesconi, Aaron Benfer, Michela Francesconi, Jackson Benfer, and Piper Benfer.
Family and friends are invited to join together to a viewing on Friday August 16, 2024 from 10:00 to 11:00 am at Christy Funeral Home, 11 West Broad St., Millville, NJ. A funeral service will begin at 11:00 am. Cremation will be held privately. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Greenwood Memorial Park, Millville. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Judy’s memory can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, alz.org. Memories of Judy and condolences for her family may be shared on the tribute wall.
