James Karageanes, age 86 of Ocean City and formerly of Millville, passed away Monday, December 2, 2013 at Shore Memorial Medical Center after a brief illness.
Born in Johnstown, PA, he joined the US Navy and served three years as a Seaman during World War II.
Mr. Karageanes worked as a bartender and then married. He moved to Millville and worked for Armstrong Cork Co., Kerr Glass and Foster Forbes, and retired after 35 years.
He was a member of the Parish of All Saints, St. Mary Magdalen, Millville and St. Damien Parish of Ocean City. He was a member of the GBBA Local No. 9, The American Legion Nabb-Leslie, Post No. 82, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Bush-Kerrick, Post No. 2169, and The Knights of Columbus. For 35 years he also worked as a bartender at Otto's Bar in Millville, where he was known as "The Greek."
He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He enjoyed going to the casino, fishing, walking, playing horseshoes, spending time with his grandchildren, and he adored his great granddaughter.
Mr. Karageanes is survived by his wife of 62 years Margaret (Yarima); two sons, Jeff and wife Cindy of Millville, and Larry of Durham, NC; two daughters, Sandra Streeper of Ocean City, and Cynthia DeGregorio and husband Douglas of Millville; two sisters, Mary Molchan of Johnstown, PA, and Margie Taylor of Conemaugh, PA; three grandchildren, Douglas DeGregorio, Dana Ashbridge and husband Larry, and Deanna Dominguez and husband Joe, all of Millville; one great granddaughter Macie Ashbridge; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral liturgy will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, December 6, 2013 in The Parish of All Saints, St. Mary Magdalen, Buck and Depot Streets, Millville. There will be a viewing on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. in the Christy Funeral Home, 11 W. Broad Street, Millville. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Park, Millville.
The family requests memorial contributions to the Inspira Frank and Edith Scarpa Regional Cancer Pavilion, 1505 W. Sherman Ave., Vineland, NJ 08360.
