Irene Jane (Horton) Smith

Irene Jane Horton Smith, age 83 died peacefully at home surrounded by family on January 25, 2024, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

She was born to William and Helen Horton in Kearny, NJ. Irene was raised primarily in Millville, New Jersey where she graduated from Millville High School and retired from the Millville Public School after 25 years of service.

She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years Jesse (Jake) Smith of Fairton, NJ, her three children Sherrie (Axel) Johnson of Medford, NJ, Tim (Toni) Smith of Cedarville, NJ, Duane (Lisa) Smith Egg Harbor Township, NJ; her five grandchildren Brandi Smith of Houston, Texas, Taylor (Bodia) Johnson Husak of Cherry Hill, NJ, Amanda Smith of Conway, SC, Drew Smith of College Station, Texas, Michaela Johnson of Arlington, VA, a brother William (Joan) Horton of Jacksonville, FL and a brother in law Gary Smith of Las Vegas, NV.

Irene was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, and friend. She enjoyed cooking, baking, crocheting, and cheering on her children and grandchildren at athletic events. She was an avid reader and could often be found basking in the sun while finishing a novel. Irene was especially fond of country music and dancing. Irene and Jake were often the last to leave the dance floor and were admired by all for their graceful twirls.

Rock Hall Maryland became a second home for Irene during the warmer months. Irene’s summer days were spent on the water crabbing, driving the golf cart around the campground visiting friends and many nights at “The Shack”.

Cremation and services will be held privately under the care of the Christy Funeral Home, Millville, NJ. Condolences may be shared on her tribute wall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be considered for either The Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org or The Wounded Warrior Project at www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
