Harry K. Hyson Sr., age 93 of Millville, passed away Sunday morning, Dec. 15, 2013, in the Millville Center, Genesis after a brief illness. He had been in declining health.
Born in Salem, he grew up there and married. He joined the U.S. Navy and served during World War II from 1943-1945 as a Carpenters Mate 3rd Class. He was awarded an Asiatic Pacific Ribbon, an American Theatre Ribbon and a Victory Ribbon.
He had operated Hyson's Hardware Store for a time then worked for the Salem Public School system, the Bridgeton Public School system, and most recently, and from its beginning, Cumberland Regional High School. He retired in 1982 after ten years of service as the Building and Grounds Supervisor. In his retirement he had lived in Northport, FL before returning to Millville.
He was a member of the Haleyville United Methodist Church.
He enjoyed woodworking, building furniture, gardening and landscaping.
He is survived by his wife Janet (Lichtel) Hyson; a son Harry K. Hyson Jr. and wife Sue Ellen (Rocap) of Millville; a daughter Ellen Dayton of Millville; a brother Donald Hyson and wife Barbara of Alloway; five grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife Ann H. (Halter) Hyson in 1994; two brothers, Benjamin and Calvin Hyson; a sister Edith Adams; and a son-in-law Robert Dayton.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, Dec. 18, at 11 a.m. in the Christy Funeral Home, 11 W. Broad St., Millville.
There will be a viewing from 10 to 11 a.m. in the funeral home before the service.
Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Park, Millville.
