Francis Erwin “Erv” Dick, 81, of Millville, passed away on 30 March surrounded by his loving family.
Erv was born in Millville on Friday the 13th of June 1941, a date he always said was lucky. Erv graduated from MHS in 1959 where he excelled in varsity football and wrestling, earning a scholarship to Denver University. He graduated from DU in 1963 with BA in History and thereafter began his 43 year career as an educator. He married the love of his life Melanie on 23 December 1962. She will forever miss his beautiful blue eyes.
A lover of Rodgers and Hammerstein, he would often sing Oklahoma at the top of his lungs with his beloved daughter Barbara Ann. An avid sportsman, Erv coached his son Erwin’s fifth grade basketball team to the championship. A passionate outdoorsman, he loved nothing more than hunting pheasants with his son Kevin and his Britney Spaniels.
Erv was a history teacher at Arthur Rann and Galloway Township Middle Schools for 35 years where he also coached the girls’ soccer team to several championships. His family will fondly remember the yearly family vacations to Colonial Williamsburg and summers at Gandy’s Beach and Stone Harbor. An extensive European traveler, he enjoyed surprising Germans with his rudimentary grasp of the language.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Melanie Ann Dick, children Barbara Ann Valinotti (husband Vinny), Colonel Erwin F Dick USMCR (wife Tabby), Kevin Dick (wife Robin) and grandchildren Jake, Amanda, Kevin, Mason, Ciaran, and Finn. He is also survived by his loyal dog Lexi and the friendliest cat in the world, Tangerine.
Erv’s family will host a memorial service on 19 April at Christy Funeral Home, 11 W. Broad St., Millville from 4:30-5:30 pm, followed by visitation from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Please note the service and visitation are reversed. In lieu of flowers, his family request donations to St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church on Carmel Rd. in Millville where Erv was a member.
