On a bright sunny day, November 1, 2025, our mother Alma Jean Kates crossed over peacefully with her children at her side.
Jean was born July 5, 1931, and was a homemaker most of her life. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting, and making beautiful blankets for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. They will become family heirlooms. She also enjoyed the shore and nature.
Jean's family was among the first group of Quakers to arrive in New Jersey in 1679. She was a direct descendent of Asher Woolman, younger brother of John Woolman, famous Quaker, preacher, abolitionist, and animal rights activist of Mount Holly.
Jean leaves behind to cherish her memory her children Thomas and Belinda. She was predeceased by her son Michael. She is also survived by her grandchildren Nicole, Russell, Rachael, Zachary, Monica and Krista and great grandchildren Mark (Michael), Matthew, Katie, Eliana, Arthur, Jude, Robert, and Kylie, as well as her daughter in law Karin Kates.
Graveside services will be held on Friday November 7, 2025 at 1:00 pm at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, 601 W. Main St., Millville, NJ. Memories of Jean and condolences for her family may be shared on her tribute wall.
